Welcome
Transport for London (TfL) Board Members – Introduction from Andy Lord the Commissioner
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Transport for London (TfL) Board Member.
This year TfL celebrates its 25th anniversary. During that time we have been working to grow and improve transport in London to help support jobs, homes, opportunities and economic growth across the capital. We are now one of the world's busiest, most innovative and largest urban transport authorities, with our 28,000 colleagues supporting more than 21 million journeys every day.
Becoming a Board Member provides real opportunities to individuals wishing to make a contribution to improving London’s transport system and the lives of all Londoners. The role of the Board Members has never been more significant in holding me and my Executive to account as we work to ensure we provide not only safe, affordable and reliable transport - but also that we deliver on our vision of being a strong, green heartbeat for our city as we progress on our journey to net-zero.
The Board, through the expertise of its Members, provides strategic guidance and challenge to the Executive Committee, and is responsible for approval of the most important matters affecting our organisation, including our annual circa. £10 billion budget and our business plan. Board Members have a vital role in holding us to account for the delivery of the business plan, our delivery of major infrastructure schemes, and our operational and budgetary performance. Effective Board scrutiny is essential as we continue to strengthen our financial sustainability and redouble our efforts to ensure we are an organisation that is more diverse, inclusive and fair - reflecting the city we serve in which we enable everyone to thrive and achieve their ambitions.
The Board consists of up to seventeen Members appointed by the Mayor who, between them, must have a broad range of experience and skills, including experience of transport, finance and commerce, national and local government, the management of organisations and management of trade unions or matters relating to workers generally.
The Mayor appointed a new Board in September 2024 and we are seeking up to two additional Members to strengthen two areas particular areas, one covering financial, procurement and commercial oversight and governance and one to add further experience of property development including development in an industrial or operational context. Applicants with a financial and commercial background would ideally hold a recognised professional qualification in a relevant field and knowledge of Local Authority and Central Government funding and financing arrangements.
A list of desirable skills is outlined under the Candidate Requirements section.
London's diversity is its greatest strength, and we strive to ensure Board Members reflect that diversity. We welcome applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability.
This site details the application process including an Equality and Inclusion form. There is also background information on the organisation and the roles and responsibilities of the TfL Board.
The closing date for applications is Sunday 23 February 2025.
We thank you for your interest and look forward to receiving your application.
Andy Lord
TfL Commissioner
